Till' Death Do We Pinterest: A Formal Affair

Already picked out a formal murder mystery and looking for theme assistance?

Window shopping for a swanky event to get your friends together and need an excuse to re-wear that expensive ball gown you bought for that one party that one time?

Well, look no further! We've got you covered in this post with plenty of inexpensive decor, diy, or just idea fodder for your high-class event.

One of the most commonly used themes for a murder mystery party is to create a world of elegance, usually that of a fancy cruise, a Hollywood party, a charity banquet, and so much more! Formal themed murder mysteries are the perfect excuse to get all dolled up and bring out your finest silverware. From getting ready for the party together with your friends like you would before high school prom to putting on a posh accent and sweet-talking your friends with a fake $100 bill, formal murder mysteries are arguably more exciting than actually living the high life. Or, at least that's what I tell myself. ;)

Typically formal events are defined by the use of high-class materials such as crystal, with the primary decor color being either white or black, often with an accent color of purple, deep red, silver, or gold. For this set-up, we will be using black as the primary color, and gold as the accent color. The black represents the mystery and scheming present at the event, and the gold represents the relative wealth of the characters.

Decor:

Attach golden balloons to golf tees to line your guests' grand entrances.

What fancy high-class party doesn't have a crystal chandelier? Make your own with this easy tutorial!

Use gold and black fabric remains or plastic tablecloths to create a divine ceiling drape to tie the room together.

Cover the dining table with a black tablecloth and add a vase of flowers (both plastic or otherwise). Set the table with disposable crystal-cut plates, silverware, and wine glasses. These items can be found cheap at your local grocery store, target, wal*mart, or dollar store, and it makes the after-party clean up simple! Another fantastic addition would be chair covers in either black or gold.

Food:

Appetizer: As far as simple fancy appetizers go, deviled eggs are a winner. Here's a delectable recipe from Simply Recipes!

Main Course: The key to the main dish at your murder mystery party is to make it something simple that most people will eat, but to embellish it to make it appeal to your theme. In this case, adding a sprig of parsley, and drizzling the sauce on to each plate of this simple pasta dish from Real simple.

And for the beverage, I don't even have to tell you that wine and champagne are considered to be the 'fancy drinks'. However, if you're not into alcohol or this is a children's party, bottled red grape juice and sparkling apple cider are definitely the way to go. For a more personal touch, wrap the bottles in a gold or black napkin. Not only does this addition make the bottles look classier, but it helps keep drips under control.

Dessert: And, finally, the crowned jewel of the party. The chocolate fountain. Probably the most swanky dessert out there. These can be fount at Target, Best Buy, party stores, and, of course online and many other similar stores.

Buffet: If your party is to be held buffet-style, then here are some tips. Set out the usual cold cuts and vegetable platters, but add a fruit salad and a soup of some sort. The chocolate fountain still applies here, because a chocolate fountain is always a good idea. Another possible addition could be platters of cupcakes with chocolate frosting, set in gold wraps upon trays using this wonderful diy layered platter tutorial painted gold!

Now that you've got these ideas running around in your mind, be sure to keep thinking of great additions to your party, because, well, it is your party, and your time to decorate however you want!
